  • It’s exactly what murder is.  Now if murder is wrong thus Abortion is wrong.  And I’m viewing that as a Generic view.

  • What are your reasons for saying abortion is wrong?

  • Well, no one can accuse you of beating around the bush. I think abortion should be avoided, but I’m not so certain that you can always make things so black and white.

  • RYC

So you’d rather dumbly believe whatever has been spoon fed to you?

  • It’s interesting to me that everyone who supports abortion wasn’t aborted.

So maybe they shouldn’t abort that baby after all.  It might just grow up to be a healthy, happy, pro-choice human after all.

    Sigh… yes, abortion is wrong.

  • Abortion is nothing more than murder. We don’t legalize asisted suicide, because it’s wrong, why leagalize PREMEDITATED MURDER?! Anyway. Good short post.

  • REASONS: Abortion is a destruction of something valuable, whether you think that it is life or the potential of life. Most people believe that the value of life is incomparable, in the sense of being vastly greater, to any other value (such as the value of a dollar, or of convenience). If this is true, it would certainly be wrong to destroy life. Likewise, it would be wrong to destroy the potential for life.

If anyone has a disagreement or a counter-argument, I’m always happy to debate.

  • Well I agree life is precious. But some questions to ponder…. “potential for life” – so does this make protected sex between man and wife with a condom wrong? By discarding semen you are destroying the potential for life. This is the Catholic position. They feel that any birth control other than the “rhythym” method is a sin. So, is a zygote human life? Potential yes, but should the morning after pills be banned? If this is a taking of human life why do churches not do funerals for women who miscarry? Of course there are the whole considerations of conception through rape. Similarly what about the child who fails to develop a brain stem?

I’m no fan of abortion. Seeing the ultrasound pictures of 3 beautiful little lives that are now my children really brought home the fact that abortion should be avoided. It’s just that we cometimes can’t reduce the complexity of life down into black and white categories.

Lastly, if life is precious then I assume that you are an opponent of the death penalty, correct? I hope you’ll do a follow up post addressing some of these issues. I’d love to read it.

  • A question for ronlawhouston:

you said, “‘potential for life’ – so does this make protected sex between man and wife with a condom wrong? By discarding semen you are destroying the potential for life. This is the Catholic position. They feel that any birth control other than the ‘rhythym’ method is a sin.”

But does birth control destroy the potential for life? I personally know of many people who have had children while on various forms of birth control. It does not prevent all chances of having a baby. In the case of abortion or even morning-after pills, (and some forms of birth control) there is already a much greater potential for life in the first place (what percentage of unions actually result in a child, compared to percentage of fetuses which produce a child) and a much more definite sense of destroying that potential. (look at the number of babies born whose parents used birth control compared to the number of babies that live through abortion).

Plus, if discarding semen is a sin, then why would God make the woman’s body naturally discard an egg or two every month? Is that a sin? You run into some serious problems arguing that way.

As to the whole miscarriage thing, I personally think it should be a bigger deal, and more people should step up to help the family deal with the resulting grief, and not just say “well, you can always get pregnant again” or other such heartless words to parents who have truly lost a child.

With rape: should children who have violent, sinful, unpleasant fathers be killed simply to make other people feel better? How does that make sense? Should we also kill children who have abusive fathers, or prostitute mothers, or other questionable parentage? There is always the option of adoption, and there is always the possibility that this child may bring the mother an unexpected blessing out of a dark situation. God works in mysterious ways, even through the unpleasant messiness of our lives. That is the wonder of the gospel.

  • i think it stems from a general fault in society at large which will not be fixed until Jesus returns

    so yes, it’s wrong

I am uncomfortable getting too heated in discussions like this, however, as (and I know I harp on this) this is a world ruled by the “prince of the air” and it will only get worse. We should not ignore the problem but our focus must always be on the individual, on the person, not the sin, regardless of what it is. We need a compassion for the lost…and attacking them for having abortions makes it hard to be compassionate.

People need God. That’s the bottom line and needs to be at the heart every purpose of the Christian, because cahnging a law won’t bring those people to know God

Not that i’m sure all of that ‘s relevant….

  • I always wonder if people who call themselves “pro-life” are vegetarians or vegans.  If not, they should really call themselves “pro human life” for greater clarity/accuracy.

  • Hey Anna – I always tell Caleb – I don’t have many answers, but I do have lots of questions. I agree with a lot of what you say.

  • I don’t know what it is. Hm.

Honestly, what I get annoyed with is people equating “pro-choice” with “pro-abortion.” I’m in no way advocating abortion by being pro-choice. If somebody gets pregnant, I feel they should take responsibility for their actions and obviously it would be in mostly everybody’s best interests to give the baby up for adoption. I dislike abortion. But at the same time, I’m not going to try to tell anybody what to do. It’s sad, but it’s not the exact same as murder because if you commit a homocide against somebody, you’re killing a functional member of society.

I also think that anybody that is pro-life and also supports capital punishment and any military action (in Iraq or elsewhere) is completely contradicting everything they say they stand for. (It seems to me that “pro-life” can all to often amount to nothing more than “pro-fetus.”)

But, I like hearing people’s opinions on the topic, so let me know if you think I’m wrong. (As long as you can do it respectfully .. I hate that stupid name-calling, opinion-bashing crap that far too many people resort to.)

  • Thank you for the encouragement. Seriously. I’m scared but the people surrounding me are amazing me with the strength they show.

Oh, and I agree… that abortion is wrong. I won’t get involved in the debate because I’m not up to that at the moment. But I do agree with you.

  • Hey …

Thanks for stopping by and leaving the Word! Appreciate your thoughts and service to the Lord. We need more young people like yourself – and trust me, we are praying for you. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I have had a busy and somewhat rough week. As a Military Chaplain, I have to handle both soldiers and family members during deployments – and that keeps me busy. Plus I have been working on getting our home sold. Praise God we have a potential buyer and now we are about to embark upon the process of closing the deal.

Have a great day in the Lord … and be blessed!

    Pastor Phil
