  • According to the Global Rich List, I’m the 885,757,221 richest person in the world. Now, that may not seem very impressive, except that that puts me in the top 14.76% of the global economy. See how you score at http://www.globalrichlist.com/

I was watching a sermon on discipleship by Craig Greschel recently (from www.LifeChurch.tv), and he cited some interesting statistics.

    • 1.3 billion people in the world don’t have clean drinking waterPoverty1
    • $6 billion could provide basic education for everyone in the world
    • $6 billion is the approximate income of Starbucks annually
    • Half the world’s population lives on less than $2 per day
    • Water, basic health care, and nutrition for everyone alive would cost about $20 billion
    • The approximate amount of money spent on ice cream in the US every year is $20 billion

About 29,000 people around the world die every day of starvation according to World Vision.

My youth group at church is participating in a national event known as the 30 Hour Famine. We’re all going to fast for 30 hours to raise money for World Vision’s work overseas. The goal? Feed the hungry, and maybe learn what it’s like to go without food. If you’d like to make a contribution, message me or leave a comment and I’ll get you contact information. Oh, by the way, the government has stepped in and provided grants to World Vision, offering to quadruple the money raised by the 30 Hour Famine project. That means that if you donate $360, you won’t just be feeding one person — you’ll be feeding 4!

Why am I doing this? Am I just trying to annoy people and make them feel guilty with statistics and stories? I hope that’s not what I accomplish. I’m not trying to pry your wallet from your fingers. I’m trying to show you a need where, if you feel led, you can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

I guess I have more reason to care than some people. Most people around here don’t know a lot about me, but I grew up in a third world country. My family did ministry in areas where people’s houses were made from cardboard and scrap metal. We knew people whose children died of starvation and sickness. We worked in communities that were amazed at what God’s people were doing for them. Having seen what a little bit can do in a place where people have so little, I can’t help but want to do things like the 30 Hour Famine.

If you don’t feel led to give, do something better. Pray. Starving children need spiritual food just as much if not more than physical food. It’s better to starve to death knowing God than to live in luxury and die hopeless. Pray for the people that don’t know Him — not just the starving physically, but all those who are starving spiritually, craving something that will give them satisfaction and hope.

  • Hey Caleb,

Thanks so much for the comment at my Xanga site. I LOVE that song! LOVE it! Actually, I led that song at my Mens Fellowship meeting tonight. You seem like a deep young man. The Lord is proud of you. And I am glad to know you!

    Blessings!

  • Why was I ever decanted.

  • Actually, I think you should annoy people and make them feel guilty about this issue. Not by force, but by simply stating how it is. We are blessed, and I think we need as many people reminding us of that as possible.

  • I know exactly what you’re talking about; in Malawi, it was SO HARD to eat meals because of the kids that were around; we knew they weren’t getting any. We wanted to share our food, but we couldn’t because there wasn’t enough to go around & fights would break out. It was a really hard summer, simply knowing how much I had back home. Still, I think I’d rather live over there than anyone else in the world; I feel like I’m here at home, simply biding my time until I get to go back.

I’ve been trying to get my youth group to take part in the 30 hour famine, but unfortunately, not everyone cares about it as much as I do. I guess it does help once you’ve been there & seen it all. . .

I hadn’t heard these stats though; I’m not a big ice cream eater; maybe that’s why.

  • is it okay if I link this blog to my page? I thought I’d better ask before I did it, in case you don’t want a ton of random people getting on here. . .

  • The difference between my dreams and reality.

  • Be praying for you. Just don’t eat any dead squirrels when it’s all over with!

  • Hey, I’m doing my part to help the world’s poor: a $1.95 can buy a poor white boy a Chick-Fil-A biscuit.  Seriously though, I did the 30-hr Famine two years ago.  Make sure your pee stays clear.

  • That is outrageous.  I am outraged.

Now, I have to go unpack my dog’s $30 bed and the special food that I bought for her.  Damn.

  • caleb…last year the youth at our church did the same thing…so if they do it again this year i will definitely provide for them.

i admire your desire to feel what others feel…although when your time has ended you will have the luxury of getting food and clean drinking water.

you are a wise young man

  • that is so wonderful that you’re doing something to help.  last year i raised $7,000 for a bakery in north korea that can feed 4,000 starving children a day.  an average north korean child gets less than 1 1/2 ounces of food PER DAY.  after hearing that, you can’t HELP but do something, right?  God has blessed me with an extremely compassionate heart for the starving children in north korea, and i’m so glad i can actually do something to help.  that is totally AWESOME that you’re doing the 30-hour famine.  i will definately pray for you.

  • My class would stone me if I tried something like that.

  • Have you ever read the thing where if there were only like 17 people left on earth, how many of them would be: White, Black, Rich, Poor, Christian, Old, Young, etc.? It’s really interesting. I don’t know what you would search on google for, but if I find it, I’ll let you know.

And through Compassion International, I “adopted” a child in Bolivia to whom I send money and letters and gifts to regularly. Because I support her, she gets a good education, Bible study, new clothes on holidays and birthdays, and doesn’t have to work as much to help support her family. (She has been working since she was 3)

    Good stuff.

  • lol, my name is actually chelsey.  my nickname is nancy drew. :D   (and i don’t even have blonde hair…how does that work??) and…that song is super old but it’s kinda funny.

i TOTALLY know what you mean about wanting God to send money instead of just a whole lot of prayers.  the hard thing to remember is that it’s all for God so it’s okay if He does it on His timetable instead of ours.  i mean, sure, we know that but it’s just really hard to remember.  i sincerely hope and pray that you are able to raise a LOT of money through your fasting.

    love in Christ,

    chelsey

  • I got chocolate and a stuffed dog from my dad. I didn’t give anything, except a hug.

actually, I haven’t even given that yet. I’ll give it tonight.

  • I was thinking about this today. My mom is extremely concerned with the problem that 20% of Americans are poor. It’s sad…we have a responsibility to help them!

  • I did the 30 hour famine last year, too.

  • Of course not, that’s only a segment of my list. :)

  • wow, I’ve don’e the 30  hr a couple of times. It’s a really cool experence(sp?)!

I’ll be praying; thanks for reminding me.

  • hey dude, read your comment on Alethos site

you said:  it’s just that people in our country seem to want to be brainwashed. Thinking just isn’t popular anymore.

I concur! It seems like many Americans just want a new definition for everything as they’re bored by what is real so they make up whatever they feel like, and say everybody has to think like them…

OUCH! I tried this money counter, I am so convicted I will not say what percentage my wife and I came in but I’m  repenting for my covetous attitude…LORD JESUS HELP US!!!

  • I, like my buddy up above (lollygagger), read your comment on Alethos site. I noticed that you’re reading Brave New World. This book made a profoundly deep point. The thing that always amazes me about that book is the fact that it was written in the 1930s and it is just as; if not even more applicable today then back then.

  • Hey your name’s in the paper. Muahaha. But you don’t have a big pretty picture like Kelsey.

  • Yeah, Congratulations on that Caleb..that’s really an honor! I wish I’d known you’d been in the paper! Too bad they didn’t get a picture.

  • This is a GREAT post.

  • Ryc (thetheologianscafe): I assume you are a Christian from your comment, so troubled by your hypocrisy.

“Thou shalt not kill.” (one of the Ten Commandments, as you should know)
“Hey pacifist, killing isn’t bad.” (you)

    Can you clarify?

  • I visited Global Rich List.

Since I don’t have a job, I’m in the poorest person category. ha ha.  Since my annual income for the past 2 years has been. . .$0

    oh wait.

For Christmas I did get like. . .160 something dollars. . .I guess if I counted that I would be higher.
