  • So Well-Dressed, You’d Never Guess What’s Underneath

    Skeleton

“A sermon full of mere words, how neatly soever it be composed, while it wants the light of evidence, and the life of zeal, is but an image or a well-dressed carcass.”
     - Richard Baxter

I drew the skeleton with no clear idea why, but with a general concept of the point I wanted to make with it. As I was finishing up the digital version of the image, I despaired of finding a proper quote to put with it, and decided to make it a “name the caption” post. Then, just as I clicked “save,” I decided to check up on a blog that I read regularly. There was the perfect quote for my picture!

It also reminds me of Matthew 23:27, which says in the ASV, “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.”

Ah, heck, we’ll have a “name the caption” anyway…

  • I would have gotten your point without any quote, whatsoever.

  • Can you possibly make a post about this on TheWorshipCafe? I think it’s very thought provoking.

  • the grateful dead! preacher style

words spoken without intent to live up to them?

  • RYC:  a male giraffe is a bull, just like a male alligator or a male buffalo.

  • now whats’s wrong with being sharp dressed?

  • i take that as a huge complement
    i think

  • and strangely enough, i wasn’t even thinking about them when i wrote the song
i was lsitening to van morrison most of the day, and then mewithoutyou
and i was bored so i finally wrote down a song

  • btw, very interesting post
you drew that?? i can barely draw a stick figure well

and personally i think that grateful dead reference is highlarious

  • “So Well-Dressed, You’d Never Guess What’s Underneath”
    A pink bikini.

I think the picture makes the point pretty good.

  • yes, that was a fortunate event… one that wouldve resulted in my suicide being successful otherwise…

explanation of earlier comment: “words spoken without intent to live up to them”… “them” meaning “words spoken”… its kind of a looping comment… i say those fairly often…

  • @ drakon:

theres nothing wrong with being well-dressed… theres nothing wrong with being dressed scruffy or naked either…

the significance is that being “well-dressed” implies class, taste, poise and style… things that people naturally pay attention too… and it doesnt really matter whats being dressed, people will pay attention to it based on the fact that it’s sharp and pleasing to the eye… even if whats behind that sugar-coating isnt pleasing to the soul…

no, theres nothing wrong with being well-dressed, stuff just looks good when its dressed well… its we put garnishes on gourmet meals, $800 suits and manicures on corpses for viewings and lots of smart-sounding “big words” in speeches…

being well-dressed is a credibility buff… but theres nothing wrong with it…

  • funny how a suit and tie is whats considered well-dressed these days… back in the day, renaissance france, men wore this kind of dress thing…

politicians campaigning need to look good, sales reps marketing need to look good, businessmen selling need to look good… and they all where suits… why?

  • caleb, i came across something i think you might wanna take a look at… i’m skeptical of it, but the history is surprisingly accurate and interp of hebrew symbolism is likewise… its the application thats a bit crazy, according to these guys, the RCC and the USA are both agents of satan…

  • Powerful image. . . title? “Dead Man’s Bones” (WWJC? “what would Jesus title it”)

  • ryc: but did you look in the dictionary?

  • I like your theme – simple, elegant. I’ve been watching your comments to xangathemes and on the forum… I hope they get the wrinkles out and the javascript in before too long. I really want to do some major overhaul on my site and at the moment the weblog module editor is broken. You can’t even delete one. Ugh!

Love the post today, btw. hehehe. “…and I tell you cigarettes are a blessing from God…” Sorry, couldn’t resist.

How about: “A funny thing happened on the way here…”

  • Comment 1: It is a nice phrase, isn’t it?

Comment 2: That’s because I’m not ‘titanically’ creative, so I stole her idea…wantahorse72 was lame, so was horsechika92, and all the other ideas were worse… : I

  • reminds me of that grail-choosing scene from the third indiana jones flick.

  • he also made a nooma called “flame” which is where most of my theories on sex stem from… thanks for the heads up

  • I’ve been to churches like that. :o

(I saw your comment on TheWorshipCafe)
